Hosted PBX vs. On-Premise PBX: The Battle Continues

Choosing a hosted PBX versus an on-premise PBX has taken place since cloud telephony showed up on the scene.

The argument of choosing a hosted PBX versus an on-premise PBX has taken place since cloud telephony showed up on the scene, and until recently, it was still unclear which solution would win the battle.

However, as technology has changed and improved, hosted PBX has come out on top.

One major reason that hosted PBX is becoming the go-to option for telephony solutions is due to the nature of the office.  While physical offices were once the norm, they are no longer expected or required for many businesses these days.  Rather, employees are working from their home, or even a remote location halfway across the world.  On-premise PBX doesn’t make sense for a company in need of mobility, nor does it make sense for a company that does not have a physical location to store the hardware required.

Another important reason hosted PBX is becoming a popular choice is because of the ease and peace of mind that it can provide a business.  With an on-premise PBX, it’s important that a business have the IT staff to support it, for fear of down-time.   For most companies, no phones means no sales, and it’s a risk that few are willing to take.  With a hosted PBX, the provider is in charge of ensuring that your telephony is up to date and remains running, freeing up your IT staff to work on other things.  Providers also go to great lengths to ensure that reliability is never a concern, ensuring that all customers’ calls are received.

Finally, a hosted PBX is much more cost-effective than an on-premise PBX.  With an on-premise solution, it’s necessary that businesses buy a lot of hardware.  There are also continuous updates as telephony solutions are constantly being improved, causing businesses to constantly spend money ensuring that their phones are working properly and securely.  With a hosted PBX, the provider is in charge of ensuring that updates are installed and purchased.

It’s safe to say that hosted PBX should no longer be seen as a fad that will not stand the test of time.  Businesses everywhere are realizing the benefits of lifting the on-premise PBX burden off their shoulders, and are switching to hosted PBX.
