But, unlike international toll free phone numbers, they can be dialed from multiple countries.
But, how does a UIFN number really work? And how do you know if this global communications tool is the right fit for your business’s unique needs? In this post, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions that we get about UIFN numbers to help you make the right choice for your business.

To ensure that you get a UIFN number that is accessible from the countries you are targeting, check with any providers you’re considering. It’s best to have a list of all the countries you’ll need before you start shopping so you can easily rule out providers who don’t meet your criteria.
What is the dialing format for UIFN numbers?
All UIFN numbers are formatted with with an eleven digit fixed number. However, there are slight differences in the dialing prefixes depending on the countries in which your callers are located.
How long does it take to provision a UIFN number?
Again, this depends on your provider and the countries for which you need a UIFN number. Most providers require at least 30 business days advanced notice to provision a UIFN number. But for more remote countries, it can take as long as 6 months to get a number.
How much does a UIFN number cost?
The monthly fee for a UIFN number is typically more expensive than international toll free numbers. Additionally, UIFN numbers require a one-time registration fee that can cost hundreds of dollars. It’s a significant investment, so you want to make sure that it is the right choice for your business before purchasing a UIFN number.
Are there any restrictions around UIFN number registration?
If you’re familiar with international toll free numbers, you know that some countries require proof of a business presence in the country for which you are requesting a number. Most UIFN numbers don’t require this; but, you do have to register the phone number in a minimum of two countries in order to purchase the number.
Do UIFN numbers come with business phone features?
Many providers, including AVOXI, combine virtual numbers with hosted PBX functionality. That means that you get to customize your UIFN number(s) with a variety of features, including call forwarding, call recording, IVR, and more.
Can I use a UIFN number for conference calling?
It makes sense for businesses that operate internationally to want to use a single phone number for conference calling. Unfortunately, these phone numbers cannot be used for this purpose.
However, there are alternatives. For example, the AVOXI Core Cloud PBX phone system includes a conference calling feature that uses international toll free numbers for a variety of countries. From the AVOXI Core Online Portal, users can create and send invitations with international toll free numbers for multiple countries. So, a conference call participant in Australia would dial an Australia toll free number, and a conference call participant in Canada would dial a Canada toll free number. Using the same access code, they can both participate in the same conference call.
