PBX Server – A Closer Look

With PBX systems, users have options. They can choose to have an on-premise or hosted PBX system, and choose to use the PSTN or an IP network. The most cost-effective solution is the hosted IP PBX, as VoIP is less expensive than PSTN, and upgrades and maintenance are taken care of by the PBX provider.

PBX phone services have been in use since the early 1960’s. Early PBX systems enabled businesses to place internal calls without having to use an actual phone line, and allowed outside lines to be freed up from internal traffic, meaning that businesses needed fewer phone lines. By the 1990’s, technology had drastically evolved, but many businesses were hesitant to start over completely with their PBX system. This led to the creation of ports and cards that could be added to an existing PBX system, which allowed network ability and functionality to be increased without expensive hardware purchases. By the late 1990s, features such as IVR were becoming common, and hosted providers were starting to pop up, as well as VoIP providers. Today, PBX systems are much more robust, and businesses have the choice of hosting their own PBX on-site, or having a provider host the system for them.

PBX servers offer an array of benefits to businesses, including:

  • Cost reduction
  • Robust telephony solution
  • Enhanced business image
  • Improved customer service
